wpd has concluded a supply agreement with turbine manufacturer Nordex for the Finnish onshore project Nuolivaara. The Nuolivaara wind farm is wpd’s first construction project in Lapland, beyond the Arctic Circle. It will be the fourth joint project of wpd and Nordex Group in Finland after the 188 MW wind farm Karhunnevankangas was just announced a few months ago, demonstrating an efficient cooperation between both companies.

The Nuolivaara wind farm is being built north of the Arctic Circle, about 25 kilometers northeast of the Finnish town of Kemijärvi, in the border region of the two municipalities Kemijärvi and Salla. The 96.9 MW park will consist of 17 N163/5.X turbines from Nordex’s Delta4000 series. The turbines will be supplied in the cold climate variant with anti-icing system for the rotor blades to operate the turbines at temperatures as low as -30°C and generate high annual energy production even in these harsh climatic conditions. The project-specific turbines, designed for 5.7 MW output, will have tubular steel towers and a hub height of 159 meters.

With the delivery order to Nordex, wpd has set another successful milestone in the Nuolivaara project. In addition to the positive contact with the local landowners and authorities, the company can also rely on good cooperation with the regional grid operator. The project will be connected to a new substation which will be built by the national transmission system operator Fingrid.

”With Nuolivaara, we are making an important step in the growth market of Finland,” said Heikki Peltomaa, Managing Director of wpd Finland Oy. ”We are glad that with Nordex we have a turbine supplier on our side who proved to meet the demands of the challenging climatic conditions in Northern Finland.”

”We are pleased to once again be able to support wpd’s growth plans in northern Europe with the latest order for the N163/5.X turbine,” says Patxi Landa, CSO of the Nordex Group. In addition, he adds: “We are convinced that the highly efficient N163/5.X will be able to generate constant high yields throughout the year at this demanding northern location.”

The project is scheduled for commissioning by end of 2022. The start of road construction is already planned for April 2021. With the Nuolivaara wind farm, wpd will further expand its strong position on the Finnish market and drive forward the energy transition in northern Europe.
